Set a timer for 15 minutes and pick one area - junk drawer, nightstand, fridge door. You’ll be amazed what can shift in a quarter-hour.
2. The “One Bag In, One Bag Out” Strategy
Every time you bring something new into your home (a shirt, a mug, a toy), something old has to leave. It’s a rule that keeps clutter from creeping back in.
3. Use the “Would I Buy It Again?” Test
Hold the item and ask: If I saw this in a shop today, would I pay for it? If not, it might be time to say goodbye.
4. Create a ‘Donation Station’
Designate a box or basket where things go before they’re donated. Once it’s full, it’s out the door. No second-guessing.
5. Get the Kids Involved (or Not)
If your children are old enough, get them to help with their stuff. If they’re at the tween/teen stage and not emotionally attached to every rock they’ve ever found - win. Otherwise, quietly declutter while they’re distracted with Roblox.
6. Don’t Declutter on a Bad Hormone Day
Seriously - step away from the sentimental boxes when you’re bloated, emotional, or irrationally mad at everyone. You don’t want to toss your wedding album because you’re low on magnesium.
